Scout skills a launching pad for development

Last weekend, various Scout Regions celebrated their youths’ achievements. In the Gauteng Scout Region, Scouts who earned their Springbok Scout and BP Awards were honoured at the annual Springbok Parade.

Scouting gives young people the opportunity to come together around a shared goal, to develop skills and serve their communities by taking action for a better future. This is where youth achievement connects with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Whether through quality education, reducing inequalities, building sustainable communities or strengthening partnerships, young people have an important role to play in creating positive change.

The awards mark a milestone, but they also mark a beginning. As Chief Scout Khonzaphi Mdaka said: “this is not the end of your journey, it is a launching pad”.

The skills they have developed, the challenges they have overcome and the values that have been deeply etched into who they are through Scouting are not simply achievements to look back on. They are tools they can carry into the next chapter of their lives. We look forward to what they will do with everything they have learned.
