Behind every young person who grows through Scouting is often a volunteer who encouraged them, guided them and helped them believe in themselves. Eastern Cape South Regional Young Leaders Representative and National Awards Committee member Jarryd Main shares why recognising those who give their time can make such a difference.
“From my own experience, Scouting volunteers are essential in guiding a young person’s journey. I am fortunate to serve on the National Awards Committee, where I see firsthand the impact that adult volunteers continue to have on the lives of young people.
Recognition serves as the foundation of acknowledgement for volunteers and youth who go beyond what is expected of them. It motivates people to continue stepping up to challenges. Showing gratitude is one of the simplest, yet most powerful things we can do for each other.
We have all been teenagers and thought we knew everything, but often there is a lot to balance like school, sport, personal lives and Scouting activities. Without positive and helpful adult leaders in my life, I would have had a much more difficult Scouting journey. Adult volunteers make you feel seen, heard and valued. Without them, Scouting would not be able to take place. It’s simple: no volunteers, no Scouts. And without Scouts, I would not have learned valuable life lessons, made these incredible memories or had the opportunity to hold positions where I can help create a better world.
Scouting volunteers are life-changing. I encourage Scout Groups to reach out to their Adult Support Team or look on the National SCOUTS SA Awards and Recognition page and nominate their volunteers for all they do.”
