Scouts from three Scout Group within the West Rand District in Gauteng proudly participated in the International Day of the Boy Child celebrations hosted at the Maropeng Visitor Centre at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site earlier today. The event brought together NGO’s, community partners, and young people to reflect on the importance of supporting boys to thrive and succeed.
Representing SCOUTS South Africa, Sakhile Mbatha, Gauteng Scout Regional DSD Project Coordinator, together with Troop Scouters Tshegofatso Modiselle (1st Thuto Lefa Troop), Thepo Makgae (1st Munsieville Primary Troop), and Nicolus Muzonyane (1st Servumus Troop), and Kwame Moroeng, addressed guests and delegates on the role Scouting plays in shaping resilient, responsible, and emotionally healthy young men.
In her address, Sakhile highlighted the challenges many boys face; including peer pressure, violence, absent role models, and limited safe spaces; and spoke about the importance of mentorship, belonging, and positive values in helping boys navigate these realities. She reminded delegates that Scouting is more than camping and outdoor activities; it is about preparing young people to be ready for life.
She also reflected on how Scouting helps boys discover their strengths, build confidence, learn leadership and accountability, and develop friendships that become lifelong support systems. Central to her message was the belief that boys are not defined by their circumstances, but by their potential as future leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals, and community builders. The Troop Scouters shared their personal testimonies and how Scouting has shaped them into to men they are today.
The leaders were accompanied by 15 Scouts, who not only participated in the day’s programme but also enjoyed an educational tour of the visitor centre, exploring the story of human development and our shared origins at this iconic heritage site.
Through partnerships like the Gauteng DSD Initiative and opportunities such as these, SCOUTS South Africa continues to empower young people with the skills, values, and support they need to become active citizens.
