The Courses
Leadership Development Course 1 (LDC1):
LDC 1provides initial Patrol Leader training to young Scouts working towards their Traveller advancement badge. LDC 1 is a course that introduces the Scout to being a leader, the importance of the Patrol system, roles and responsibilities within the Patrol, and how to run a Patrol-in-Council (PiC). The practical aspects of the base rotations are designed to foster leadership, collaboration and teamwork.
LDC 1 aims to achieve the following:
- Enhance Participants’ understanding of the importance of the Patrol System, their role within the Patrol and how they can influence the Troop function (via the PiC).
- Develop teamwork and collaboration through tasks designed to only be successful with everyone’s participation.
- Develop basic Scouting skills (Pioneering, Scout Promise and Law). Introduce Participants to the different aspects of leadership, and what a leader is and is not.
- Introduce Participants to the Safe from Harm framework through an anti-bullying discussion.
LDC 1 courses are currently run at Regional and District level
Leadership Development Course 2 (LDC2):
LDC 2 is aimed at Junior Scouts working towards their Discoverer. LDC 2 is a course that introduces the Scout to the roles of the Patrol Leader (PL) and their Assistant Patrol leader (APL), the Court of Honour (CoH), and what it takes to plan an activity.
LDC 2 aims to achieve the following:
- Enhance Participants’ understanding of the different responsibilities of a Patrol Leader (PL) and an Assistant Patrol
- Leader (APL) and how the APL supports the PL in their role.

- Develop planning and organisation whilst gaining insight into the elements that are involved in planning a Scout activity, as well as develop teamwork and collaboration through planning a 24-hour camp.
- Motivate Participants to achieve First Class by providing a better understanding of the requirements for First Class and how to achieve them.
LDC 2 courses are currently run at Regional and District level
Patrol Leader Training Course:
The PLTC is designed to provide intermediate Patrol Leader training to PLs and APLs and is an optional requirement for First Class in the Scout Programme.
PLTC should ideally be attended by PLs and APLs who are about to or have just embarked on their First Class. The course focuses on leadership opportunities and experiences, as well as camp, hike and project planning, among other skills and theory.
PLTC courses are currently run at a Regional level.
Patrol Leader Training Unit:
The PLTU courses are one of the finest challenges on the South African Scouting calendar. Exciting outdoor activities support the specialised leadership training you will receive during ten tough, but achievement filled, days.
The courses are staffed by fellow Scouts and Scouters/Rovers who have previously risen to the PLTU challenge. Attend one of these stimulating adventure courses and learn the skills that will make you far more effective leaders, both in your Patrols and in your everyday life.
