May 20, 2022 - May 22, 2022

R1950

The annual Scouts KonTiki raft competition.

Covid-19 has stopped us from holding Kon Tiki for long enough, but there will have to be some modifications to the event. We need to heed the Disaster Management Act rules that are still in play. Numbers thus need to be limited and sleeping arrangements to be modified.

Other modifications to the normal Kon Tiki format :

  • Numbers will be limited to 20 Scouts per Troop + 4 Scouters, maximum Scouts on raft 10 – minimum 6.
  • Raft sizes limited to 24m2, maximum deck space 16m2, minimum decorations. Raft judging will remain as it was.
  • Raft crews will have STA’s and show prowess in manoeuvrability.
  • There will be no non-raft competitions (i.e. no land competitions)
  • NO VISITORS will be allowed into the event.
  • No Beaver Challenge
  • Sleeping will be one person in one tent on land. You will be lonely but it’s a small price to pay to maintain safety.
  • Non Rafting Troops will be allowed to camp and participate in the event.

It will be back to basics – we focus on rafts and have no other events running. Raft construction and mobility will be our focus. Each Troop will be responsible for running their own Troop program for the Scouts remaining on land.

Raft entries have been capped this year. First choice has been given to Teams who have paid to enter in 2019, so space is limited. Registration for the remaining raft entries will open online on the 6 APRIL 2022.

The costs for the 2022 event are: –

  • Team entry (Full entry + 24 badges) – R1 950.00
  • Numbers will be limited to 20 Scouts per Troop + 4 Scouters
  • No extra parents or helpers will be permitted entry
  • No day passes for Friday, Saturday or Sunday (if someone has to leave the camp they may not return)

Rafts to Launch at 11:00 Saturday.  More details to follow.

The Regional Scout Team will run a Campfire and Wide Game on Saturday night.

There will be 3 mass events – Opening Parade at 10:15 Saturday, Closing Parade 12:00 Sunday and Camp Fire – we will expect everyone to be suitably dressed as the “masked avengers” when appropriate, and encourage everyone eligible to be vaccinated.

Please remember that there is NO PARKING available in Arrowe Park itself. Scout safety is paramount and fines will be issued to offending Troop with vehicles or Trucks parked in the Camp grounds. Parking is available only between the Scout grounds and the Yacht Club (East of Arrowe Park) or on the verge area off Atlas Road (West of Arrowe Park).

Arrangement are being made to allow trucks to drop off equipment from Thursday (19th) at Arrowe Park, more info to follow.

Our Kontiki website is presently down, all information will be made available and emailed to participants. The Kon Tiki booklet will be released in a few days detailing the rules and requirements in more detail. Watch this space J
