A legacy of growth and kindness through adventure

Message from Chief Scout Khonzaphi Mdaka

Dear fellow SCOUTS SA volunteers, youth and family,

As the year draws to a close, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering enthusiasm and commitment to Scouting, our learning objectives, our young members, and the values we stand for.

This year, we have truly lived our values, from the inspiring community service projects by Meerkats, Cubs, Scouts, Rovers and adult volunteers that have brought us closer to those in need, to creating and seizing opportunities for personal growth and practical skills development. Whether it was through fun-filled outdoor adventures like hikes, Kontiki, District and Regional competitions and camps, or youth and adult leader training courses, you have all contributed to creating an environment where wellness, happiness and personal growth can thrive.

As I look back, there are a few moments and initiatives that stand out for me. These include the importance of this year’s National Challenge ‘Health and Well-Being’. I know from my own life that at times things are tough. I think some of you might agree that this year flew by, yet to many – including myself – it – felt like a hard-fought battle to get to the end of 2024. Despite this, you worked tirelessly to complete the National Challenge which gave you tools to embrace your health and personal well-being. I’ve loved seeing how Groups embraced yoga sessions, hikes and service projects that while helping others, also inspired a stronger sense of purpose and self-worth amid our young members.  Another personal highlight for me was being able to represent you all at the World Scout Conference in Egypt where World Scouting introduced their new triennial plan, strategy and brand. When reviewing and discussing their strategy, it became apparent that as a Scout Movement in South Africa the way we are moving aligns well with the new World Scouting plan. In January, the National Manco and Regional Commissioners will be meeting to finalise our plan for the next triennium, and I look forward to engaging with you on it.

In the coming year, we will also be embracing a new challenge. 2025 will be dedicated to ‘Heritage’. We will celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and learnings from across our country and from within SCOUTS South Africa. This is an exciting opportunity for us to deepen our understanding of one another, honour our shared customs and traditions, and build a more inclusive and united future for the South African Scout Movement.

In closing, I thank our supporters, our donors, and all those who contribute in kind or financially to ensure Scouting can take place in all our provinces – be it from Scouting in township and village schools, to community Groups in urban suburbs. Your generosity is what enables our Scout Groups, Regions and the National team to continue to build our country one child, one Scout Group, one community at a time.

I would also like to thank the Board for the support and guidance they give us. We appreciate the time and dedication you have shown to the growth of SCOUTS South Africa. I am very proud of the fact that our board is a diverse and intergenerational team of experienced young and older leaders.

It is also important to acknowledge and thank the dedicated trustees of the Scout Foundation. The Scout Foundation has evolved since its conception and with its current strategy I think we are on the right track to reaping the fruits of our labour in the years to come.

Last but not lease, I want to thank and acknowledge our SCOUTS South Africa youth, their families and our volunteers. To our passionate volunteers, thank you for your unwavering commitment, time, and leadership. Thank you for ensuring that Scouting continues to inspire countless individuals to serve, grow, and make meaningful contributions to their communities. Your efforts create a legacy of kindness, service, and adventure, empowering the next generation to become active, responsible, and compassionate citizens. To our young people, I say thank you and well done for reaching for your dreams by tackling your personal advancements, interest badges and service initiatives. We see how hard you do your best and how far you have come to be ready for life!

I look forward to another fantastic year of Scouting with you!

Your Chief Scout,
Khonzaphi Mdaka
