Lisa Avery is a Wood Badge holder from Orange Grove in Johannesburg. Her son Nicholas is married with three sons Ryan (10), Liam (6) and Kyle (2) and lives in Amanzimtoti, Durban. Her daughter Michayla has one son Raiden (6). She met her partner Alan, who has two adult sons, through Scouting. Lisa works for the Catholic Church head office in Doornfontein as an archives data capturer. Her hobbies include Scouting, crocheting, loom knitting, crafts and church work. This is her Scouting story:
“I was a Brownie and Girl Guide and so when my son was of age, in 1997, I joined 1st Sydsands Scout Group in Sandringham, Johannesburg as an Adult Leader. When ADC Pam Walker retired I took over the role. In 2006 I stepped down from running a Pack but carried on as ADC. At the moment I am a Regional Support Member for the Northern District Cubs. When I think back on all my years in Scouting I have so many fun memories from our camps, Pack meetings and courses. I am passionate about Scouting! It plays a major role in my life and has helped me to be the person I am today! I just love Scouting!
I obtained my Wood Badge in 1999 at Gilwell Florida. I still remember how much fun we had during the course! To this day I still use the skills I learnt, event when I am not Scouting. For me, the important part of the Wood Badge Training is the “extra” training it provides us to assist the Cubs to learn and to have fun. Learning by doing is still the best way in my opinion.
As a Wood Badge holder I believe that I should live by my Scout Promise and Law and try at all times to do my best, to be a good citizen and to obey all laws, and to be a good person all-round.”
Lisa’s life motto is:
“Be your best and live life to the fullest!”
