SCOUTS South Africa (SSA) is proud to announce the launch of their Alumni Network. As one of the oldest charities in South Africa, the youth organisation is eager to re-engage and re-connect with its former members.
The Alumni Network aims to give those who have been in Scouting, including former Scouts and Scouters, a forum and network in which to remain active or passive supporters, stay informed on key Scouting matters and have an opportunity to share of their time and talent with current youth members.
“The Alumni Network members will get invited to Scouting events in their area, will be given opportunities to support Groups with their committees and activities or to join our mentorship programme and inspire youth to reach their potential and increase their employability in their field of choice. If our former members are not in a position to assist, they can simply rekindle Scouting friendships during events and stay abreast of current developments through various communication channels”, explains Bill Sewell, Chairman of the SSA Alumni Network Committee.
The Alumni Network members will also get a say in who governs the Scouting Movement. “The SSA Constitution provides for the Alumni Network to vote two people onto the Scout Governing Board. This gives Alumni Network members the opportunity to aid in steering the organisation in the right direction,” he elaborates.
SCOUTS South Africa currently comprises of over 190 000 boys and girls nationwide of which most reside in rural and disadvantages areas. By reaching out to former members the organisation hopes to boost the sharing of skills and the expansion of service delivery to children and youth whom could benefit from the non-formal educational programmes which take place predominantly in the outdoors. “We hope by launching our Alumni Network we can grow our membership and enhance our programmes to ensure that we continue to prepare children and youth for life, before life happens!”, concludes Bill.
